Similar to the Retail Council of Canada, the National Retail Federation in the US advocates the interests of the retail industry and offers a wealth of information.
Beyond the featured news, here are three topics from their website that webhdt believes may be of interest to all ecommerce owners:
Make sure your website is working properly – “A page load delay of … a tenth of a second, can be enough for a customer to change his mind about an online purchase. If the delay is one full second, that's almost an eternity.” … “When a potential buyer is faced with a slightly slower website, it affects not only whether the consumer will actually make a purchase but the overall impression of the retailer. “If they see the site as slow, they're also finding fault with things like the layout, the merchandise and other elements…”
Test your website regularly and address any issues as soon as possible.
Weather has an impact on sales – Consumers seem to wait for the winter chill to purchase winter wear. According to planalytics.com bad weather seems to be boost online sales.
Keep an eye on the forecast and plan for your inventory accordingly.
How will consumers shop this holiday season? – More than 2,000 American holiday shoppers were surveyed about their behaviour during the 2016 season. You can read all of the results in the NRF’s 2017 Holiday Planning Playbook but here are 3 noteworthy ones:
- 1/3 of holiday shoppers purchase gifts in October or earlier; 2/3 of shoppers waited until November to start purchasing them.
- 63 % noted they’d like to use online wish lists to assist with gift purchasing.
- 75 % checked return policies before making a purchase.
Are your sales promotions working? Does your website provide an online wish list? Is your return policy clearly stated? If you have a brick-and-mortar store, can a shopper buy online and pickup or return in-store?
